Stephen Coetzee & Astrid Schmulian
Department of Accounting, University of Pretoria, South Africa
Stephen and Astrid are a teacher team from South Africa, teaching large groups of more than 500 students. Through team teaching over the past decade, they have pushed each other in their respective zones of proximal development, to grow as teachers and education researchers. The bringing together of teacher and researcher has been the heartbeat of their teacher team. Stephen and Astrid’s socio-constructivist view of teaching and learning is evidenced through embracing team teaching, promoting collaborative learning, and their use of technology in the classroom. Their aim is that their students actively learn, through observing their interaction with one another and their interaction with their students, to think more critically, read more attentively, communicate more precisely, while growing as independent thinkers and life-long learners. Their current research interests align with their teaching and include the investigation of team teaching, collaborative assessment, and the use of Messenger bots in teaching and learning. Stephen & Astrid have published widely, including publications in Issues in Accounting Education, Journal of Accounting Education and Accounting Education. They have received numerous teaching awards including the South Africa’s National Excellence in Teaching and Learning Award in 2016.
